In Behavioral Health, including Addiction Recovery
Millions of people are affected by challenges in behavioral health/addiction recovery.
1 in 5 people in the U.S. are affected: 44.7 million adults in 2016 with “any mental health” challenge (9 million with “serious” psychiatric illness), 20.8 million adults in 2015 with “substance misuse” challenge -- and 10 million struggle with both mental health and substance misuse.
Data analysis is a promising tool in healthcare, e.g. to provide individualized cancer care. Yet data analysis of patients’ diagnosis and care re. mental illness and/or addiction lags.
* Many stand-alone psychiatric facilities / addiction recovery clinics don’t use robust Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems now, mostly due to cost and lack of funding. Recent legislation may increase their EHR funding.
* To the extent that hospital networks actively analyze data, they have prioritized other areas.
* Specific EHR systems inadequately address behavioral health care flows and data needs.
