“Behavioral Health” Enhancements in Electronic Health Record (EHR) Systems
Millions of people are affected by challenges in behavioral health/addiction recovery.
1 in 5 people in the U.S. are affected: 44.7 million adults in 2016 with “any mental health” challenge (9 million with “serious” psychiatric illness), 20.8 million adults in 2015 with “substance misuse” challenge -- and 10 million struggle with both mental health and substance misuse.
Electronic Health Record systems could be greatly improved, to benefit patients and reduce practitioners’ frustrations and burnout.
* criticisms from doctors/nurses/others re EHR systems overall (See November 2018 New Yorker article by Dr. Atul Gawande, plus other physician surveys.)
* specific EHR systems inadequately address behavioral health care flows and data needs
